VACCINATION PROCESS IN INDIA

After fighting so long from Covid -19 , India has finally started its vaccination process across the country from 16 January.

India hai approved 2 Covid-19 vaccines , Covishield and Covaxin for restricted emergency use in the country against the virus. Oxford Astrazeneca's vaccine Covishield has been manufactured by the Pune based Serum Institute of India (SII), the world's largest vaccine producer. While Covaxin has been developed by Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech together with the Indian Council of Medical Research.The government has signed purchase pact on Monday with SII for 1.1 Crore doses and for 55 lakh doses  from Bharat Biotech.



Who Will Get Covid 19 Vaccine first

Covid 19 Vaccines will be initially offered to healthcare and other frontline workers , who are above 50 years of age and finally to the remaining population.
The priority group of above 50 years also further subdivided into those above 60 years and those between 50 and 60 years based on evolving pandemic situation and vaccine availability. The latest electoral rolls for the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections will be used to identify those aged 50 years and above.
Areas with high Covid 19 cases : States and Union Territories will also have a generic flexibility to do priority phasing of the roll out for the identified groups where Covid 19 infection prevalence is high.

Registration for the Vaccine

In December last year, the Central government had announced the launch of the Co- WiN app to aid agencies with the distribution of vaccines to citizens. Notably the app is also designed to enable citizens to self register for the vaccination process.
At the time of registration documents such as Aadhar , driving license , voter ID , PAN card , Passport , Job card or pension documents must be produced. One can also submit Health Insurance, Smart Card , MGNREGA card , official IDs issued by MPs , MLAs or MLCs , Passbook issued by bank or post office and Service card issued by state or central government and public limited companies would also be accepted

Doses of the Vaccine


The 2 doses of the Covid 19 will be administered 28 days apart , and the vaccine is expected to offer protection 14 days after the 2nd dose is given . Effectiveness of the Vaccine to be administered will be seen after 14 days after getting the dose and a gap of 28 days has to be maintained between the 2 doses.

Price of the Vaccine

Oxford Astrazeneca's Covishield has been priced at Rs 200 per shot and with GST of Rs 10 it would cost Rs 200. " We have given a special price of Rs 200 for the first 100 million doses only to the government of India on their request, " Adar Poonawala , Serum Institute's Chief Executive said.
Each dose of Covaxin will cost Rs 309.5 , inclusive of taxes. Without the taxes it will cost Rs 295 . The government, however confirmed that of the 55 lakhs Covaxin doses , 16.5 lakhs will be free of cost. This effectively brings down the price of each dose to Rs 206 , official said.

Who will not get the Vaccine


1. People with a history of anaphylactic or allergic reaction should not be given Covid- 19 Vaccines.

2. Persons with a history of immediate or delayed onset allergic reactions to vaccine or injectable therapies, pharmaceutical products, food items should avoid vaccination.

3. Pregnant Women or who are not sure of their pregnancy and lactating mothers should not receive vaccine.

4. Persons with active symptoms of Corona virus infection should not be vaccinated.

5. Covid- 19 patients who have been given anti SARS - COV- 2 monoclonal antibodies or Convalescent plasma should not receive the Covid- 19 vaccine.

Possible Side effects of the Vaccine


1. Some individuals may develop a mild fever and pain where they have  been injected.

2. In case of Covishield, other mild side effects could include headache, fatigue, deep muscle pain , malaise , fewer , chills and joint pain and nausea.

3. Mild side effects of Covaxin includes pain and swelling where injected, headache, fatigue, fever , body ache , abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, sweating, cold and cough.

4. States have been asked to be ready to deal with any Covid 19 vaccine related side effects.
Apart from the above normal sides effects these vaccines have larger side effect on people across worldwide.

5. At least 2 people died after receiving the  Covid- 19 vaccine in India, however the deaths were not related to the vaccination itself, centre clarified on Monday citing their post mortem reports .
Post mortem revealed 1st death was due to Cardiopulmonary disease and 2nd death was due to anterior wall infarction with Cardiopulmonary failure, health ministry said .

6. Public Health experts have said that Covid-19 Vaccination should be enlarged as Vaccines don't generally cause death

7.  23 people died in Norway within days of receiving their 1st dose of the Pfizer Covid -19 Vaccine with 13 of those deaths apparently related to side effects of the shots , New York Post reported citing the health officials

All 13 were nursing home patients and at least 80 years old.
